A 13 year old American boy is climbing Mount Everest, hoping to be the youngest person to scale the world’s highest peak. Jordan Romero, has set off from Nepal’s capital Kathmandu to the base camp on the Chinese side of the mountain.
Jordan climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya when he was ten and wants to be the youngest person to climb the highest mountains on seven continents. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do before I die. I just happen to be doing it at this age. I happen to be going for a world record. But I just want to climb it.”
The youngest person to climb Everest at the moment is Ming Kipa Sherpa, who was 15 when she reached the top in 2003.
In 2000 a 15-year-old boy from Nepal lost five fingers in his failed attempt to climb Everest. Since then Nepal has set a minimum age of 16 for climbers but China has no limit.
Jordan’s father and stepmother go with him on all his climbs.
