China start building the world’s largest telescope

fast-radio-telescopeMeet the 500 metre Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope that China is building – that 200 metres wider than Wembley Stadium!

Its a mega-science project that will enable astronomers to jump-start many science goals, for example, surveying the neutral hydrogen in the Milky Way and other galaxies, detecting faint pulsars, looking for the first shining stars, hearing the possible signals from other civilizations – eek!

The telescope is a massive bowl-shaped radio signal collector located in the Guizhou province in southern China and it’s due to open in 2016.
