There’s a Power Ranger Day, an Otter Egg Week and even a Plant Wrestling Hour!

La Tomatina

But starting on Monday a very different, even more exciting week’s starting. It’s good old British Tomato Week.

And to celebrate we’ve got a list of the most amazing tomato facts ever collected together. Check them out…

-La Tomatina is an annual festival in Spain, where people throw 150,000 tomatoes at each other.

-The largest single tomato plant in the whole world covers an area of 56 metres sq. at Walt Disney World Resort®, Florida USA. That’s bigger than 2 medium-sized ants and an Olympic size swimming pool put together!

-Tomatoes are thought to come from Peru and Luke’s back garden.

-Tomato seedlings have been grown in space before! Heinz Tomato Ketchup has also been given the green light by NASA to be used on the International Space Station.

-The largest ever tomato on record was picked in Oklahoma, USA in 1986 and was a MASSIVE 7lbs 12oz – for people who aren’t from the 18th century that’s 3.5kg – and it weighed more than the average UK newborn baby! It was sliced to make sandwiches for 21 people.

-In Ohio, America, they love tomatoes so much that tomato juice is even the official state beverage.

-Did you know that tomatoes aren’t just red? They can be yellow, pink, purple, black and even white.

-The first tomatoes in Europe may originally have been yellow, as they were first referred to in writing as “pomo d’oro” – golden apple.
