Shrek the Musical is coming to the UK!

Could you ever imagine our beloved grumpy ogre Shrek singing? Well he is going to be and, not only that, he will be singing with Donkey, Princess Fiona and all the other characters right here in the UK next year!

DreamWorks has announced today that Shrek the Musical will open at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in May 2011.  The new stage musical is based on the story from the first ever Shrek film, inspired by William Steig’s book Shrek!, and so will contain all those characters that first made you fall in love with these strange fairy tales.

For those of you who may have missed the films, Shrek is simply a fairytale, but not as you might expect! Shrek is a swamp-dwelling ogre  who doesn’t really like company, but he is forced to go on a hero’s mission to save a princess in order to reclaim his land. Joined by a donkey that can speak (and never stops!), our hero somewhat reluctantly rescues Princess Fiona from a fearsome dragon.

Shrek the Musical takes this storyline and combines it with brand-new songs, as well as many you will remember from the film, and gives the story a whole new imagination on the big stage.

Shrek the Musical has already proved a fantastic success, having already played  in America from December 2008 to January 2010 and nominated for eight Tony Awards – that’s like the Oscars of theatre! So you know this is a show you have to go see!

Casting, performance dates, and box office details will be released soon and tickets will go on sale to the general public on October 1, 2010.
