US space shuttle Discovery makes last descent to Earth

DiscoveryThe US space shuttle Discovery has made its last ever descent to Earth.

The six astronauts fired the braking rockets late on Wednesday morning, preparing the craft for a textbook landing at the Kennedy Space Centre, in Florida.

On this 13 day mission, Discovery flew around the Earth 202 times, and travelled a total of 5,304,140 miles.

Over the 27 years since its first space flight, Discovery has flown 39 missions, covering over 148 million miles

Discovery will now be retired and will eventually go on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.
