From safaris and bug hunts to pond dipping and bat watching, there are plenty of ways for children to get close to nature in the great outdoors.

Tyntesfield, North Somerset
Family woodland adventure day – 4 August 11am – 3pm

  • A fun-packed day especially designed for families to enjoy the great outdoors together. Every day has a different theme but all include hands-on activities with the rangers, allowing children and adults to learn new skills, get involved with team-building activities, and take risks in a safe environment.
  • All children must be accompanied by an adult. Suitable for children aged 7 and above.

Ightham Mote, Kent
‘Wild Child’ den building – 5 August 12pm – 3pm

  • A great opportunity for the children to get out into the Ightham Mote woodland and learn the art of den building.

Allen Banks and Staward Gorge, Northumberland
Wild Child forest schools – 6 & 21 August 10am – 3pm

  • Come and have lots of fun for all the family in the wonderful woodlands of Allen Banks – cook on an open fire, build a shelter, make a kazoo and much more.
  • Children aged 5 years upwards.

Brownsea Island, Dorset
Den building day – 15 August 11am – 4pm

  • The Brownsea ranger team will show adventurers the best way to build a den for the outdoors, only using nature’s materials.

Summer family fun days – 16 July onwards, 11am – 4pm

  • There is always something to do at Erddig during the summer holidays. A variety of activities include Victorian dressing up and Wild Child creative days, a Mad Hatter’s tea party and The Enchanted Garden.

Calke Abbey, Derbyshire
Geocaching taster day – 25 July, 8, 22 & 31 August 11.30am – 3.30pm

  • Come along and try out a fun, new technological treasure hunt using a GPS system. No experience is needed as the Calke warden will be on hand to give guidance. This is an exhilarating way to explore the outdoors and enjoy some simple, family fun.

Hatfield Forest, Essex
Wild family camping – 26-28 August 6pm onwards

  • Join an experienced bush craft ranger for wild camping in the heart of Hatfield Forest. Bring a tent or build a natural shelter to sleep in. Rangers will be on hand to advise on foraging, fire lighting and the principles of shelter building.
  • Suitable for accompanied children aged eight years and over.

East Devon Jurassic Coast, Devon
Pond bugs and beasties – 3 August 2pm – 4pm

  • Dragonflies, skaters and waterboatman – join the National Trust ranger for some pond dipping to discover the fascinating world of pond bugs and beasties. Please meet at Branscombe NT car park and bring a net (if you have one) and white tray or bucket.

Batty Bats and Mad Moths – 19 August 7pm – 9pm

Twilight Woodland Walks – 24-25 August 7pm – 9pm
