February 1, 2009toFebruary 22, 2009

rhs1butterfly1Escape into the lush, warm climate of the tropics this winter with the RHS’ new butterfly experience for all ages, only in The Glasshouse at Wisley

For a perfect day out this winter, visit Wisley and step into the Tropical Zone of The Glasshouse to watch a variety of exotic butterflies as they settle into their new home.

Get up close to a blue morpho, an owl butterfly or a tree nymph as they demonstrate courtship flights, egg-laying and feeding from fruit platforms and nectar-rich plants such as Hibiscus, Canna and Zingiber. A heated home has been installed behind the scenes to house the majority of the pupae (a collective of chrysalises) before the butterflies emerge to take flight.

Throughout the Tropical Zone, visitors can learn all about butterflies in a series of panels highlighting the lifecycle of a butterfly, from egg to caterpillar and beyond, the differences between butterflies and moths, and much more.  You can also discover more about the important work of the Entomology Department at Wisley and British Butterfly Conservation, as well as how to attract native species of butterfly to home gardens.

Please note: You should be prepared for close encounters as the butterflies may choose to land on passer-bys.

In the Glasshouse Gallery learn about butterfly wing patterns, lifecycles and British butterfly conservation, as well as how to attract more native butterflies to home gardens. Definitely not to be missed are a series of impressive butterfly images by photographer Rakha Singh. Using revolutionary photographic techniques, the intricate details of butterflies are captured down to the finest scale and reproduced in this series of stunning 4ftx4ft photographs to dramatic effect.

Families take advantage of fun, butterfly-inspired art activity sheets for collection from the Art Cart throughout the duration of the experience. What’s more, for visitors
who have been truly wowed by this fabulous butterfly spectacular, The Wisley Shop and Plant Centre will have a range of butterfly-inspired gifts and items on sale in the
Glasshouse Gallery to ensure that everyone can create their own butterfly experience at home.

Whatever the weather, this is a colourful phenomenon guaranteed to banish the winter blues.
