This annual event celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008. It takes place in the historic town of Christchurch, which is accessible to both the Dorset World Heritage Coast and the New Forest National Park. Christchurch harbour, at the mouth of the River Stour, is tidal, and the lower reaches of the River Stour are heavily populated with pleasure craft.
The Christchurch Regatta and Carnival culminates in a parade on the Saturday evening, with awards for large and small motorised floats, a ‘walking class’, marching bands, the ‘most entertaining’ float, and of course the crowning of the Carnival Queen and Princess. The Carnival is rounded off with a Grand Firework display.
There is music throughout the weekend on the Main Stage, and there is a rowing regatta on the River Stour on the Friday.
