Discovery For All

How sharp are shark’s teeth? How do you wear a sari? Have you ever played a West African thumb piano, balanced a gourd on your head or stroked a badger? Explore thousands of real objects from around the world in these special sessions.

Hands On Base

Free admission
Children must be aged 3+ and accompanied by an adult. Drop in, some queuing may be necessary.

Dances of the World
This summer join our demonstration and participation dance sessions in the Gardens to learn African, Latin American and Indian dance. Each session contains a short talk about the dance’s origins and significance, followed by a demonstration to music and the opportunity to join in and learn steps.

Indian Dance with Crishna Budhu
Wed 29 July 2 – 2.45pm and 3 – 3.45pm

Weaving together the graceful movements of Classical Kathak dance from northern India with popular Bollywood dance steps.

Nature Trail Discovery
Every Wed from 29 July – 19Aug 2 – 3.30pm

Join Jim Murphy from the Trust for Urban Ecology at the Nature Trail and discover a summer environment alive with insects, animals, birds, trees, plants and amphibians.

Free admission
Children must be aged 3+ and accompanied by an adult. Limited places. Tickets available from the Information Desk half an hour before the session.

Explore the natural environment and world around us with craft activities, bug hunts, games and other fun-filled activities inspired by our collections, Gardens and Nature Trail.

Hands On

Touch real objects from all over the world in these family sessions. Explore animals, toys, puppets, music, costume and much more in themed workshops using our amazing handling collection. Family Art Fun
Every Mon, Tues and Thurs from 23 July – 27 Aug
11.30am– 3.30pm

Join us in the school holidays for creative drop-in sessions. Create creeping critters, bird mobiles, animal headdresses and carnival masks. Please visit www.horniman.ac.uk for detailed information about individual sessions.

Family Art Fun on the Nature Trail
Every Fri from 24 July – 28 Aug
11am– 2pm

Get crafty with a variety of activities inspired by our Nature Trail, then try your hand at pond-dipping on our pond platform.

For families with children aged 3+. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Drop in. Last entry at 2pm.

Make and Create
Every Sat from 4 July – 29 Aug
1.30 – 2.15pm and 2.45 – 3.30pm

Celebrate festivals and the changing seasons through art and craft each weekend. Make a lantern for Japan’s Tanabata festival, celebrate carnival with a pair of wings, make Jack climb a real beanstalk and create your own pop-up animal toy. Busy Bees

Fun sessions for Under 5s and their carers discovering the Museum. Creative play, enchanting stories from around the world, Museum objects and simple craft activities, changing every week.

For families with children aged under 5. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets available from the Information Desk at 10.30am and 11.30am. Limited spaces.
