London 2012 Open Weekend is an annual UK-wide celebration counting down to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

During the weekend there will be hundreds of exciting events, from family sport days to circus skills and exploring hidden archives, are to be part of London 2012 Open Weekend, supported by BP.

Within the North West, there will be over 45 events are taking place enabling everyone to share in the excitement of the Games, be inspired, get involved, unleash creativity and try something new!

Cheshire

The Body Cartography Project (USA) and Cheshire Dance joined together to redefine and explore what many consider to be one of the UK’s iconic railway stations – encouraging audiences and commuters alike to re-engage their sensory curiosity of this regional gateway through performance and installation works. The Station/Stationary project was commissioned through the Cheshire’s Year of Gardens Spaces Programme, which was also linked via the various transport gateways to Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008. It is also part of the Open Weekend which celebrated the launch of the Cultural Olympiad programme.

A World Cup style 5-a-side charity football tournament raising money for Greenbank Project. Greenbank Sports Academy is included within the official London 2012 Pre Games Training Camp Guide, and promotes sport to disabled and disadvantaged athletes. One third of the population of Merseyside have issues with literacy. MFRS, in partnership with the Reader Organisation will deliver a series of training sessions to train fire fighters to lead reading sessions. The leaders will deliver reading sessions across Merseyside, to initiate an interest in reading and to develop their understanding of issues raised in the text. The sessions are free of charge. MFRS will be hosting the ‘Lead to Read’ Open Day on 24 July 2009 which is composed of introduction of the project with demonstrations and workshops of the reading sessions.

A giant video carousel will allow observers to select vintage news and video clips from the BBC North West archives using hand and body movement by stepping into voting zones and triggering the item they wish to view. All footage relates to moments in our shared heritage from the 1970s and 1980s when the public were encouraged to come together in open space and celebrate: from the opening of the Liverpool Garden Festival to Les Dawson on Blackpool beach, a human bird competition in Sefton Park to Spandau Ballet arriving by helicopter at Haydock Racecourse greeted by 30,000 screaming fans…
