During May, why not join in with the wide range of family activities at the National Gallery over the two May bank holiday weekends (April 30th – May 3rd and May 29th – 31st ).

Sunday 2 May

Magic Carpet Storytelling
10.30–11am (Repeated 11.30am – 12pm)

Fly away on the magic carpet as it comes to land in front of a different painting each Sunday. Please note: Places are limited and are allocated on arrival. Children must be accompanied to all events. Suitable for children aged 2–5 years.

Free hands-on art workshops for 5-11’s

Spectacular Journey – Drawing and paper construction workshop
Travel into the distance and gain a new perspective in this drawing and paper construction workshop with artist Harriet Hill

Christen Købke and Danish Art

Lecturer Jo Rhymer explores the unflinching realism of Christen Købke in the wider context of his teacher Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and other Danish artists such as the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and the mysterious painter Vilhelm Hammershøi.

Family Walk and Talk, free for families of all ages. Join us on a journey through the collection where we will walk, talk and bring paintings alive!

Painting History: Delaroche and Lady Jane Grey – Tour by Dr Nicholas Penny
Sunday 2 May, 2–2.30pm and 3–3.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Exhibition

This exhibition explores the making and meaning of one of the nation’s best-loved paintings: Paul Delaroche’s The Execution of Lady Jane Grey, and examines how 19th-century French artists found dramatic subject matter in English history.
It also explores the impact of the theatre on Delaroche’s work and features several of his historical tableaux, preparatory drawings and paintings and prints by his contemporaries.

Guided tours take place every day 11.30am–12.30pm and 2.30–3.30pm. There are also themed tours every Friday 7–8pm.
