After its sold-out debut at Royal Festival Hall earlier this year, the stunningly beautiful Oscar®-winning film Peter & the Wolf returns to Southbank Centre this Christmas for six shows only. Based on one of the most popular pieces of classical music for children and featuring a newly commissioned script by renowned poet Simon Armitage plus live performance from Philharmonia Orchestra, Peter & the Wolf Live on Stage is a magical theatrical experience for the whole family.
The film brings to life Prokofiev’s classic introduction to the orchestra through the enthralling story of a brave boy called Peter and his quest to defeat the wolf. In this unique production the orchestra’s instruments take on character roles, with the narrator introducing the lovable Duck, represented by the oboe, and the grumpy Grandfather, brought to life by the bassoon. State-of-the-art technology is used to give the audience a glimpse into Peter’s world using a mini camera which explores inside a custom-built, scaled-down version of the film’s original set and models. These images are projected onto a large screen above the stage, bringing the darkly magical world of Peter & the Wolf alive before your eyes.
