Young London NavigatorsYoung London Navigators is part of the Museum’s new exhibition Sense and the City: smart, connected and on the move which explores how technology is changing the way we access and experience London and looks at past visions of the future.

Join the Young London Navigators’ Creative Challenge and complete different activities week by week as you make your imaginary journey across London. Collect special stamps in your free journey logbook at each checkpoint along the way.

All activities run from Monday to Friday and are suitable for children aged 5 and over. No booking necessary.

Week 1: The Start line

Monday 25 July to Friday 29 July
12.00 – 15.00
On your marks, get set, go!  Build a vehicle using card, glue and a little bit of engineering.  Find inspiration in the Museum’s vehicle collection and from the futuristic vehicles in the Sense and the City exhibition. Workshop suitable for ages 5 plus.

Week 2: Making tracks

Monday 1 August to Friday 5 August
12.00 – 15.00
Using maps from the Museum’s collection, go back to basics and plot a route across a gigantic map of London using string, markers and your imagination.  Once completed compare your findings with the latest navigational technologies in Sense and the City. Workshop suitable for ages 5 plus.

Week 3: Thames connection

Monday 8 August to Friday 12 August
12.00 – 15.00
This construction challenge looks at different ways to cross the River Thames.  Learning about basic building methods, use your new engineering skills to build a bridge, sail a boat or construct a cable car using a variety of materials including construction straws, spaghetti and balloons. Workshop suitable for ages 5 plus.

Week 4: Look out London

Monday 15 August to Friday 19 August
12.00 – 15.00
London has many viewpoints from which to enjoy the city.  Some are natural and some are built structures.  Week Four’s challenge is to build a mini observation tower using everyday household objects. Workshop suitable for ages 5 plus

Week 5: Design eggs-cellence

Monday 22 August to Friday 26 August
12.00 – 15.00
Who knows what is around the next corner?  Design safety features for your Young London Navigators vehicle created in week one. This week’s challenge is run in partnership with Transport for London’s Safety & Citizenship’s ‘Be safe week’. Workshop suitable for ages 5 plus.

Week 6: Fantasy future London

Monday 29 August to Friday 2 September
12.00 – 15.00

The grand finale of the Young London Navigators challenge.  Help us build a capital city of the future, filling the gigantic London map with buildings, vehicles, people and pets. Workshop suitable for ages 5 plus


Every Tuesday and Thursday from Tuesday 26 July until Thursday 1 September
Throughout the six week summer family fun programme Mini London Navigators can enjoy stories and songs about building bridges, bobbing boats and making maps.  The action packed storytelling and interactive singing sessions will help our young friends discover more about the adventures of London travel. Storytelling suitable for under 5s
