Year Produced: 2011

How does Santa deliver so many presents in a single night? The answer’s revealed in this animated fantasy that gives an imaginative and funny twist to the magic of Christmas.

Made by Aardman, the animators behind FILMCLUB favourites Wallace & Gromit, this colourful tale sees the Claus family and their army of elves working hard at the North Pole to keep their high-tech operation running smoothly.

But when the Christmas Eve gift drop finally takes place, and one little girl is accidentally missed out, only Santa’s bumbling yet big-hearted youngest son, Arthur, seems bothered.

So, helped by his grumpy granddad, Arthur borrows an old sleigh, and together the heroes embark on a mishap-filled race to set things right before morning.

Fascinating Fact: The film makes visual references to other previous Aardman Animations projects, including Shaun the Sheep, Chop Socky Chooks and the Wallace & Gromit adventure The Wrong Trousers.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Cert: (12A)

Running Time: 104 mins

Year Produced: 2011

Director: Wayne Wang

Cast: Russell Wong, Bingbing Li, Hugh Jackman, Gianna Jun

Adapted from the book by Lisa See, this compares the lives of two sets of women, in 19th-century and present-day China, to show the bonds of friendship and women’s changing place in society.

There are some fascinating insights into pre-revolutionary China – the treatment of women as possessions (including maiming their feet in the name of beauty) and their use of a secret language to express themselves are compelling elements of a fascinating movie.
