We’ve got a couple of great family films out this week, both with the thumbs up from our Filmclub experts!

Moneyball

moneyball

Cert: (12A)

Year Produced: 2011

Running Time: 133 mins

Director: Bennett Miller

Cast: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman

During the 2002 Major League Baseball season the Oakland A’s became used to failure – with 11 straight defeats whilst surviving on a shoestring budget. What followed remains the biggest ‘curveball’ in US sports history. The turning-point arrives when manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) employs a shy university graduate (Jonah Hill) with an unusual idea – players should be purchased purely on their performance statistics; their value, personality and potential are irrelevant. While the high-risk strategy begins to deliver results on the pitch, the friction caused by the idea causes problems in the clubs boardroom. Thanks to a great script from Aaron Sorkin and Pitt’s great performance, this film moves past being a regular sports drama and deals with bigger issues surprisingly well.

Fascinating Fact: The film is based on the 2003 book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game.
