Each week we look at the cinema releases for young kids to teens, under the age of 18.
We’ve only got one family film this week, but it’s a good’un, one recommended by our friendly film experts at the film education charity FILMCLUB…
Running Time: 108 mins
Year Produced: 2011
Director: Lone Scherfig
Cast: Jim Sturgess, Anne Hathaway, Romola Garai, Rafe Spall, Ken Stott, Patricia Clarkson
Adapted by author David Nicholls from his mega-selling novel, this will-they/won’t-they romantic comedy drama stars Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway as friends with possible benefits, Dex and Em.
Checking in with the (sort of) couple over twenty years – and always on the same day – this charts the highs and lows of their relationship with wit and pop-culture references to spare.
If that makes it sound superficial, it’s not – this has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments but is genuinely perceptive, hugely affecting and is anchored by appealing performances from the two leads (though the jury’s still out on Hathaway’s Yorkshire accent!).
Like this? Then also try these great films: Some Kind of Wonderful (12), Brief Encounter’ (12), Romeo and Juliet (12, 1996 version), Casablanca (U), All That Heaven Allows (U)
