Dennis and Gnasher – the characters

logo

Dennis and Gnasher stand for all that is untamed, uncontrollable and uncontainable in youngsters, celebrated by their peers and dreaded by their parents. For them, the adult world is often unfathomable – the perennial question is, why would anyone want to be an adult?

Dennis – in Dennis’s eyes, the world has been created just for him – it is his playground. Dennis is always at the heart of the show, driving the action along.   Dennis is determined to fill each and every day with as much fun as he can manage. He becomes so focused on the game that he tends not to worry about consequences and his “leap before you look” approach lands him in all sorts of scrapes.   A simple problem can escalate into a maelstrom of comic chaos and mayhem – the kid can’t help himself, he just gets caught up in the moment.   Dennis is at heart a cheeky little boy, full of life and with a heart of gold.

Gnasher - Dennis’s Abyssinian tripe-hound, a small but powerful beast who can ‘gnash’ his way through anything.   More than a dog to Dennis, he is his best friend and constant companion, a canine reflection of him, and a mute cmmentator on the chaotic action.  When Dennis needs to get something done, Gnasher is his go-to guy.  Gnasher’s instinct is to do whatever his friend asks; no task is too dangerous, unpleasant or even embarrassing.

Dad - the head of the Rubber Bands and Paperclips division, Dad loves his job and is proud of his work. If only everything at home ran as smoothly as it does in the office. Always apprehensive of what his son will get up to next, Dad despairs of Dennis and his dog and finds himself caught up in the midst of Dennis’s actions far too often.

Mum – loving and caring, Mum is a steady rock within the household. Dealing with Dennis can be stressful, so Mum regularly retreats to her relaxation classes to help her cope with the exhausting job of keeping her son out of trouble.

Curly – Dennis’s right-hand man is often the voice of reason. When the chips are down, Curly would follow Dennis to the ends of the Earth… or at least the ends
of Beanotown.

Pie-Face – Dennis’s left-hand man is very interested in pies. Everything he says illustrates his lack of brain – it is irrelevant, idiotic but always funny. He has a sweet innocence which sometimes seems almost other-worldly.

den8Walter – Walter is Dennis’s neighbour and best enemy. He is everything that Dennis isn’t – polite, well-behaved, neat and tidy. Unlike Dennis, he finds the adult world admirable, and his ultimate ambition is to be a grown-up. So he does everything the way he thinks a grown-up would, to the point where he becomes a mini-adult himself. Despite ridicule from Dennis and his chums, he always holds fast to his principles: obedience, respect and order.   Walter’s officious and pompous exterior hides an iron-hard inner core. He’s generally a worthy adversary for Dennis, and the relationship between the two boys is one of constant one-upmanship, with Dennis always trying to bring Walter down a peg and Walter always trying to get Dennis in trouble.

Mrs Creecher – Mrs Creecher is a dedicated teacher.   Rules, regulations and multiplication tables are bread and butter to this doyenne of the class room, who has an
overdeveloped sense of discipline and an underdeveloped sense of fashion.

Athena Kane – Daughter of Ratbucket Kane, Beanotown’s own rock legend. Athena is a spoilt, self-centred wannabe celebrity irritant in Dennis’s life.
