Woodland Fun

Rupert and his friends have lots of adventures in Nutwood.  Maybe there are woods near you that you enjoy exploring.  Even if you do not live near a wood take a look at the trees around you.

As trees grow they get very fat and tall.  Are there any old trees near where you live?  How old do you think they are?

Young trees are slender and short.  Have you spotted any young trees near you?  How many birthdays do you think they have had?

One of the oldest trees is called the Ginkgo biloba, it is said to have been around when dinosaurs walked the earth.  It has very strange leaves, they don’t have any veins on them at all!   Here is a picture of them. You can find them planted in some places in the UK but they only grow in the wild in China.

Kicking through leaves in the autumn is great fun!  Not all trees loose their leaves in the winter, the ones that do are called deciduous.

When you are in the woods it can be interesting to pick up leaves and bark – but never pull them from the trees.  The tree needs them more than you do!

Don’t forget to look up in the air when you are in the woods – all sorts of creatures like squirrels and birds may be watching you from up there; you may be lucky enough to see a birds nest.

And finally, make sure you take all your litter home with you.
