Created from the last two drops of steel used to build the Olympic Stadium, sport is at the heart of the mascots’ story.

Along their journey to London 2012, they will travel around the UK, meeting people and learning about all the Olympic and Paralympic sports – always striving to push beyond their personal best.

And you can help choose where they go in a special competition for schools and decide which sports they learn next in an online poll.

Curious about their names?
They are inspired by places at the heart of the UK’s Olympic and Paralympic heritage, Much Wenlock and Stoke Mandeville.

The story of the mascots has been made into an animated film, based on an original story written by Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo. Click below to watch the mascots’ film.

Monday is Monkey facts day!

Did you know that the Mandrill monkey is one of the largest species of monkey?

Do you know where they live?

Find out more by clicking below!

The Mandrill holds the distinction of being one of the largest species of monkeys in the world.

The male mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) or man-ape of equatorial West Africa has an average head and body length of 61-76 cm (24-30 in) and a tail length of 5.2-7.6 cm (2-3 in).

Males will grow to be about 3 feet tall and will live as long as 25 years, females too will live to be about 20 years old. They do not breed until between 3 and 4 years of age.

Adult males weigh an average of 25 kg (55 lb), although specimens weighting up to 54 kg (119 lb) and measuring 50.8 cm (20 in) to the shoulder have been known.

They can weigh in at close to 60 pounds for males and forty pounds for the females who are a great deal smaller.

The mandrill is also one of the most colourful mammals, recognised by its naked vivid-blue rump, red-striped face and yellow beard.

Mandrills have a very unique olive color to their fur and a very distinct coloration to their backside and face, which grows more pronounced as they get older and reach maturity. The female’s colors are duller in color but as they come into breeding season the color is more pronounced.

Other facts

Mandrills live in the rainforest of Gabon and the Congo areas as well as near the equator in Guinea.

They are very social and live as many other monkeys’ do, in large groups of animals including male’s, females and juveniles and infants. The group is led by a single dominant male who usually remains solitary.

Mandrills are omnivores, which mean they will eat both vegetation and animal flesh. They forage daily for food, taking insects and small animals as well as vegetation.

The leopard has a particular liking for Mandrill and is one of the main predators that will take the monkeys.

How are your football skills?

In the news ... the man who has broken a new world record by playing 'keepy-uppy' for 30 miles across London

Dan spent one day visiting every Premier League stadium in London while keeping a football off the ground using all parts of his body except his hands!!

Dan Magness has set a a new world record by playing “keepy-uppy” for 30 miles across London.

He visited every Premier League stadium while keeping a football off the ground using all parts of his body except his hands. He setoff from Fulham’s Craven Cottage at 8am and finished at Tottenham Hotspur’s White Hart Lane stadium around 10pm.

He now hopes to visit every Premier League ground doing his footie tricks – that’s a lot of bouncing!

The ball he used is now going to travel 10,000 miles to Johannesburg in South Africa for the opening of the World Cup. On its journey, the football will be taken through Europe and 17 African countries.

The ball was hand-stitched in Africa by Alive & Kicking, a UK-based social enterprise that runs stitching factories in Kenya and Zambia. Thousands of leather footballs are stitched and distributed free of charge to underprivileged African children as part of the scheme. Alive & Kicking director Will Prochaska said: “We’re really excited about Dan’s world record attempt. It’s a fitting way to begin The Ball’s journey to the World Cup in South Africa and we’re very proud that a ball hand-stitched by Alive & Kicking in Kenya will be the centrepiece of this amazing footballing spectacle”.

Charlie, aged seven and who lives from South London, has so far raised more than £166,000 over the weekend for victims of the Haiti earthquake by … riding his bike around his local park

Charlie rode five miles to raise money for the Unicef children’s appeal as he was concerned about children in Haiti suffering from the earthquake.

He was only aiming to raise £500, but imagine his excitement when thousands of people donated on after seeing his sponsorship page.

Charlie was sponsored from as far away as Hong Kong and New Zealand, after people read his appeal on the JustGiving website.

Charlie writes online:

“My name is Charlie, I want to do a Sponsored Bike Ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives. I want to make some money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti”.

Well done Charlie and please help Charlie raise more for the children in Haiti
