A to Z of Wildlife: F is for… Fly!

Can you hear that buzzing?

Flies

Can you hear that buzzing? That could be a fly in the room!  That noise is made by the fly beating its wings over 200 times per second.

There are millions of flies in the world and none of them have very good table manners.  They have to be sick on their food to make it soft enough to eat – yuk!

There are more than 120,000 species of flies worldwide, with about 18,000 found in North America.

A female housefly can lay up to 600 eggs in her short lifetime.

Most flies live an average of 21 days and take on various shapes throughout their short lives.

House flies tend to stay within 1 or 2 miles of where they were born, but will travel up to 20 miles to find food.

These insects have been known to carry over 100 different kinds of disease causing germs.

Wild Challenge! How long does it take you to flap your arms 20 times? I bet you can’t do it as fast as a fly can!
