A to Z of Wildlife: S is for… Salmon!

Salmon can exist in both salty water and freshwater

Salmon are truly incredible.

They can exist in both salty water and freshwater.

Salmon travel many miles from the salty sea to freshwater to spawn, often leaping up waterfalls – they are very strong.

Amazingly they only eat when they are in salty water so manage all that leaping on an empty stomach!

Salmon can be found in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as well as inland lakes like the Great Lakes.

In general, young salmon eat insects, invertebrates and plankton; adults eat other fish, squid, eels, and shrimp. Unlike all other salmon, the sockeye salmon has a diet that consists almost entirely of plankton!
