Robot from the Fun Kids Breakfast Show has got himself a new pal – Korneliusz Kog from Poland – the trouble is Robot doesn’t know any Polish words!
Robot’s downloaded a Polish language pack so he can talk to his friend and Sean’s said that if he learns the words, he’ll help him remember them by building them in Minecraft!
Now one of the best things about Poland is its food! Polish food includes loads of hearty stews and soups often served with cream and dumplings. There’s a very special soup called Barszcz [Borsch]. It’s made from beetroot and is traditionally served at Christmas.
If you have a sweet tooth, there are many delicious puddings which are traditional treats – such as Makowiec [mak-o-viec] which is a cake flavoured with poppy seeds.
Many letters in the Polish alphabet look the same as letters in the English alphabet but they can sound quite different.
Sometimes the letter C comes next to a Z or an H – but when it doesn’t, it makes the sound “TSE”.
Now that letter is found in all sorts of words… It comes at the start of the word for daughter. That word is córka [TSOR-ka] – why not give it a try?
It also comes at the start of the word for brick – that’s cegła [ts-EG-wa]!
You’ll also find it in the middle of some words, like the words for job and word for sheep – job is praca [PRA-tsa] and sheep is owca [OF-tsa]!
Here’s one last word for you to try – chłopiec [cw-OPe-ts] – that’s the Polish word for boys. The letter C is in the middle.
