Series 2, Episode 15: TV

Who invented the TV?

Bonjour! It’s Nancy here – from the soon-to-be world famous pop group Nancy and the Meerkats!

Nancy-1After our first record “Put Your Paws Up” became a massive hit, we’re off on a huge tour of the UK!

We haven’t quite made it to stadium status yet – some of the venues are more Weeny than Wembley – but I’m going to be letting you know what’s been going on each day in my journal for Fun Kids!

Today was very exciting – news of Nancy & The Meerkats has spread thanks to our sell-out tour and a TV crew came down to interview me and the girls!

It might even make the six o’clock news – and millions of people watch that! Encroyable!

Isn’t it amazing how TV does that? You know, send the video into everyone’s homes?

Plus, these days you can watch telly on your mobile phone or tablet wherever you are! The internet may be powerful but TV still packs a punch, no doubt about it!

I guess TV is one of the most famous inventions of all! I expected the person who came up with the idea became rich beyond their wildest dreams but Big Joe said it wasn’t as simple as that…

Apparently, like many inventions, the first person to come up with the idea isn’t always the one to make it a success. Big Joe said a guy called John Logie Baird was the first to transmit moving pictures way back in 1925 and a few years later he sent a signal from here in London all the way to New York!

But it wasn’t his invention that became the TV we have today – a little bit later on another way of transmitting pictures was being developed. It used more electronics and was less mechanical.

I thought Logie Baird must have been gutted, like I am every time Kitty Perry (that Horrible Hairball) steals one of our ideas, but his invention was quite a lot different to the newer type of television. His creation wasn’t as reliable and the picture was pretty rubbish. He even said himself that he was “doomed to be the man who sows the seed but does not reap the harvest” – poor Logie Baird!

I suppose there’s a lesson there for inventors too – if you can improve on an invention that already exists you might be able to come up with a new product, even if the idea started a long way back! There’s hardly ever just one person behind an invention!

Anyway, never mind the men behind the TV… I wanna see moi – the divine diva dog on the front of the TV! If I could only remember where I put that remote!
