Director: David Soren

Cast: Luis Guzman, Bill Hader, Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti Michael Pena

An ambitious garden snail chases a big dream in this silly animated comedy.

Obsessed with speed, underdog Turbo is desperate to compete in the world’s most famous race, the Indy 500. Unfortunately, his ultra-slow pace makes it impossible; until, one day, a freak accident leaves the mollusk with the super-swiftness he craves.

Now as fast as a bullet, Turbo gets to prove his new talent when he and his brother, Chet, are captured by a snail-racing human who sets him on an amazing adventure.

MarilynLove, Marilyn (12, 2012)

Director: Liz Garbus

Cast: Marilyn Monroe; Adrien Brody; Ellen Burstyn; Glenn Close; Viola Davis; Lindsay Lohan

During her memorable career, Hollywood movie icon Marilyn Monroe worked hard to create her famous personality.

But the careful creation of this image meant the real Marilyn remained hidden to almost everyone. In this documentary tribute, director Liz Garbus draws on Marilyn’s recently discovered personal papers, diaries and letters to reveal the complex woman beneath her glamorous facade.

What makes the film particularly interesting is its creative presentation of these private writings: with excerpts read out by modern-day stars to animate the actress’s thoughts and words. Archival footage and recollections from friends, colleagues and experts add further colour, producing an intimate examination of Marilyn’s life and legacy.

Romeo and Juliet (PG, 2013) (OUT NOW)

romeoDirector: Carlos Carlei

Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Damian Lewis, Ed Westwick

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has adapted Shakespeare’s tragic romance for a new generation, replacing or revising much of the original text. Hailee Steinfeld, so good in True Grit, brings an age-appropriate innocence to Juliet, while Douglas Booth makes a dashing Romeo.

Some viewers will welcome a simplified reading, using it as a stepping stone to the original or just enjoying the timeless story. But without the language of Shakespeare (who borrowed much of the plot), there are many who will view this richly costumed, Renaissance-set take as an exercise in half measures.
