For all you many, many fans of The Lord of the Rings films, the director Peter Jackson is bringing out another fantasy epic called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Before Frodo’s quest to destroy The One Ring, Bilbo himself crossed Middle-Earth in an epic adventure that set the scene for The Lord of the Rings.

Hitting the big screen in December, it is the first of two films – check out the trailer:

But did you know that it’s all based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit?

Just like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this book is one of the most popular children’s books of all time and was written 75 years ago!

It follows the life of Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit who lives a quiet and contented life who has no desire to travel far from the comforts of his home.

But then one day the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly and enlist his services – as a burglar! – on a dangerous expedition to raid the treasure-hoard of Smaug the dragon!

Before he knows it he’s on a journey that sees him cross paths with man-eating trolls, elves and a certain mysterious ring that makes him invisible!
