Peter’s Railway – books for children aged 6 to 12 (and 90!)

Peter’s Railway is a charming story about Peter and his Grandpa building and operating a miniature steam railway on a farm.

The major part of the books is a story but there is also some simple technical, or how-it-works, information.  Grandpa also tells some good stories from the old days on the railways.

The books came about because the author realised that there was nothing to keep youngsters interested in railways or anything mechanical once they had grown out of the very young books.  From feedback, children of about 6 to 12 years (and 90!) enjoy it.

Peter’s Railway is a story about a young boy who lives with his family in a cottage at the edge of his Grandpa’s farm.  It is quite a long way by road between their two houses and Grandpa does not own a car.  So to make visiting each other easier, they build a miniature steam railway across the farm.

They have some adventures along the way and use all sorts of machines and tools to help them in their great building project.  When they are having a rest, Grandpa tells Peter some stories from the old times on the railways.

The story ends with the grand opening ceremony with the first steam train running the full length of the scenic railway, through the fields, woods and past the river.  The story is illustrated with some 30 watercolour pictures.

The story continues with Peter and his Grandpa building more track and equipment for their steam railway across the farm.  As usual, Grandpa tells stories from the old railways.

The main projects are the building of a turntable at Gerald’s Cross station and a loop of track at the far end of the line to turn the trains.  Many technical ideas are simply explained as they go along and more parts of the steam engine are railway are explored.

For Peter the great excitement of this book is learning to drive the engine, Fiery Fox.  It is what he has been waiting for since they started to build the railway.  Apart from one disastrous escapade, everything works as they intended.  The stroy finishes with the railway running at night, taking Grandma to a surprise birthday dinner.

Hardback, 96 pages with 30 watercolour pictures.  There are 14 pages of simple technical drawings to explain, add interest and answer questions.
