Hallux’s i-Guide: What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is an infection of your conjunctiva, the thin layer of tissue that covers the front of your eye

The tissue becomes itchy and sore, and can make the white part of your eye look pink or red. If this wasn’t horrible enough, big clumps of white or brown gunk can get stuck around your eyelashes too.

Sometimes you get it in one eye but often it ends up in both.

It’s really really contagious and so you have to try to keep your hands clean and away from your eyes, even if they are itchy!

Salty water can help to wash the gunk away and keep things clean and sometimes a doctor may give you some drops to clear it up – but most of the time it’ll get better all by itself.
