Kids’ Guide to Istanbul

Hi, it’s Zoom here from Birmingham Airport!

I love travelling and keeping a record of all the places I’ve visited in my scrapbook!

Check out this entry from Istanbul!

Istanbul

Istanbul is the only city in the world that spans two continents.

It takes just under 4 hours to fly there from Birmingham Airport.

What I loved about Istanbul was that it’s a great mix of Asia and Europe. 2 for the price of 1! All over the city you’ll see how different civilizations have left their mark – from buildings to food! One building that is hard to miss is the 17th Century Blue Mosque – it dominates the skyline!  It gets its name from the 20,000 blue ceramic tiles that line its ceiling.

Make sure you visit the busy Grand Bazaar. There’s loads of great smells of food and spices!  The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest indoor marketplaces in the world, and also one of the oldest.  People have been shopping here for over 500 years buying jewellery, spices and the odd carpet – that may or may not fly!

Look out for ice cream sellers wearing red and gold Fezs – they may well be selling ‘Salep Dondurma’, a stretchy ice cream that droops off the side of your cone without melting and dripping.  Watching them fill the cone is as good as the ice cream itself – they’ll often grab it back out of your hand, flipping it upside down, tossing it in the air and make you lick it for the audience.

I love being able to remember the trips that I have done.

Why don’t you create a scrapbook of your holidays? It could be online like mine, or in a book or on your computer!
