Telescopes and Heart Health

Your daily tasks for Monday, 25th January 2021

Looking for something to do today? See if you can complete all 5 things of the Activity Quest Daily!

Make sure you try and complete them all today though – we’ll have a brand new list tomorrow…

1. Listen to the Fun Kids Science Weekly and tell us who’s on it

Every week Dan hosts the biggest and best podcast all about science… The Fun Kids Science Weekly!

He’s always answering hard science questions like why is the sky blue, and how hot is the sun?

He also talks to scientists and experts every week.

Give this week’s episode a listen and tell us who Dan’s guest is this week by filling in the form at the bottom of this page.

You can listen to the latest episode here…

2. Check out this video all about the human heart

Today we’re going to start learning all about the human heart and how it works.

Professor Hallux and nurse Nanobot tell us all about the heart in this video…

Once you’ve watched the video and learnt some things about the heart we want you to tell us the coolest thing you learnt!

Let us know in the form at the bottom of the page.

3. Make a telescope

You can actually make your own telescope with things you might have around the house!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • An adult to help
  • 2 x A4 pieces of black card
  • Sticky tape
  • Scissors
  • A compass
  • Glue
  • 2 x glass or plastic lenses of different sizes
  • Corrugated cardboard

Here’s how you make it:

  1. Take the first piece of black card and roll it into a tube, make sure the diameter is about 4.5cm and then secure it with tape
  2. Do the same with the second piece of cardboard but make it slightly smaller so it fits inside the first tube nice and tight but can still be slid within the first tube.
  3. Take the biggest lens and put it in the outer tube. Glue it in place if it moves. (If it’s too small to do this then do the same as is detailed for the smaller lens for the bigger lens – as is detailed in the following steps)
  4. Draw a circle on the corrugated cardboard with the compass that’s the same diameter of the inner tube.
  5. Take the smaller lens and trace around it in the middle of your new circle on the card.
  6. Cut out the circles so you are left with a ring of cardboard.
  7. Slide the small lens in the centre of the ring and use glue to secure it if it’s too loose.
  8. Slide the whole ring inside the end of the inner tube.
  9. Now slide the inner tube into the outer tube and now you have a telescope!

4. Go stargazing

Use the telescope you made to see what you can see in the night sky, or if you didn’t make one just look up!

Can you see any constellations in the sky tonight?

Constellations are just a bunch of stars that make a shape when you look at them.

Here are a couple of the most famous ones, see if you can spot them.

Of course, if you can’t spot any of them make up your own shapes out of the stars and tell us what you see in the form below.

5. Go cloud spotting

Maybe you couldn’t see any stars in the night sky?

If you’re in a city like London or Manchester for example, you might not be able to see any stars because of the light pollution.

In that case, have a go at cloud spotting!

Just look up at the clouds and see what weird and wacky shapes you can see in the clouds.
