About Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Sheherzade was written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov who was a Russian composer who lived a long time ago; he was born on 18th March 1844!

Rimsky-KorsakovA “composer” is someone who writes music and Nikolai loved composing music that used his favourite Russian folk tunes, and was about old Russian legends.

His music always sounded very rich and colourful, if you can imagine music sounding like that!

Nikolai also had a job as a soldier in the Russian Navy, and then afterwards as an Inspector of Naval Bands, where he would check that all the military bands in the Russian Navy were playing their music properly!

As well as this, he was a brilliant teacher and together with a group of friends, who were all composers too, they formed a gang called “The Five”. They spread their ideas about music throughout Russia, and eventually the whole world.

And our final important fact about Nikolai? For a composer he has a slightly above average length of beard…
