New in the cinema

He Named Me Malala (PG, 2014)

Director: Davis Guggenheim

Cast: Malala Yousafzai

Teenager Malala Yousafzai has been on an incredible journey since 2012 when the 15 year-old was targeted by the Taliban for daring to speak out against the closing of schools to girls in her area.

Miraculously surviving the attack, Malala has used her experience to promote peace and advocate for access to education, especially for girls who are at risk of being denied this right.

Minions (U, 2015)

Director: Pierre Coffin, Kyle Balda

Cast: Geoffrey Rush, Michael Keaton, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Saunders

The Minions have had lots of adventures with villains since the dawn of time– Napoleon, the Pharoahs, Dracula, even Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Unfortunately, they have a nasty habit of losing their masters and they eventually find themselves without an evil overlord to indulge. That is until a plucky Minion called Kevin and his teenage son Stuart meet Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first female super-villain, hell-bent on stealing the Queen’s crown jewels and wreaking havoc in 1960s London.

But she may also leave the Minions facing a danger unlike any they’ve encountered before.

This wild, bonkers spin-off from the Despicable Me films is packed full of physical and verbal humour, vibrant animation and a bucket load of silliness.
