Light at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester

Even though it’s winter, you might need to grab your sunglasses for these activities at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. They’re all about light! See light battle it out in the Science Showdown – UV, infrared, and visible light all want your vote and you decide who wins! You can also become a light detective and solve mysteries in the the fluorescent workshop. Find out what materials glow and why, then turn a torch or your phone into a detector to reveal what’s glowing in the museum and in your home! Plus, you can also make your own beautiful light catcher to take home! It’s free to get in to the museum and all the activities are free too. They’re on until 7th January.

Liverpool International Horse Show at Echo Arena

The Liverpool International Horse Show is back for 2017! It’s a family friendly show that combines world class show jumping with spectacular acts and live music! You can see top horses and riders that have travelled from all over the UK and Europe, including Olympians and global sports stars, who will be competing for the ultimate show jumping trophy! There’s also The Shetland Pony Grand National and a special horse stunt show called Luminoso. It’s not just for horse fans either, there’s also motocross freestylers performing nail-biting bike tricks. It’s taking place at the Echo Arena from 28th to 31st December – with the entertainment going on till after midnight on New Year’s Eve!

The Play’s The Thing at Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford-upon-Avon

You can discover the world of theatre-making at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s family exhibition The Play’s The Thing! Explore a treasure trove of weird and wonderful objects from past Shakespeare productions and discover the gory secrets of putting a play on! See the stunning costumes up close and the fearsome weaponry! You can also have a go at performing the part of one of William Shakespeare’s most famous characters, Hamlet, in front of a virtual audience! There’s loads of activities about what goes on behind-the-sciences and it’s on from now until April in Stratford-upon-Avon.

My Brother, My Sister and Me is a brand-new show on at Polka children’s theatre in Wimbledon. With a new baby in the family, a little sister has to move in with her big brother. She’s got used to the idea but her brother and Gecko – his companion – are really not keen. Especially when she starts to unpack her very large collection of hats! But they soon realise that sharing isn’t all bad and their room becomes a place of magic and mayhem – especially after lights out when they can tuck into midnight feasts and howl like snow wolves! The show is perfect for 2 to 5 year olds and is on until 11th February.

Snow Mouse at various theatres around the UK

Snow Mouse is a puppet show touring the UK this winter! It’s about a child who goes on an adventure in a magical, snowy forest. There they meet a sleeping mouse buried under the soft white flakes. The two friends explore the winter wonderland together and keep each other safe and warm from the winter freeze! The show is perfect for younger children. It’s on this December at Warwick Arts Centre before moving on to Canterbury, Salisbury, Folkestone, Bath, Brighton and Manchester in the New Year.
