Purbeck Art Weeks Festival: PAW 2012 (26 May to 10 June)

_FO11394 crop final 300dpiWhether it’s creating a giant beach art Festival showpiece, joining a ‘Tweed and Frock’ eclectic bike ride, hearing Time-and-Tide telling-tales on the Swanage sea front, taking part in a hands-on digital animation workshop or creating a Jurassic Coast-themed plasticine landscape, this year’s Purbeck Art Weeks Festival (PAW) has more family-led activities than ever before for you to enjoy!

There is loads to do and it’s all designed for young people to help you get creative!

Here’s some of our personal highlights:

Giant Beach Art, Swanage Beach by the Banjo Pier
Saturday 2 June 1.30pm – 4.30pm
This sees the creation of a temporary artwork that sculpts the sand into shapes and patterns that reflect a single environmental theme.  This is one creative session not to be missed.

Creative Walking for Families
Sunday 27th May 1-4pm
Join in this walk with a difference and participate in a number of fun family creative activities, be it a giant mud splatter painting, a firebird sculpture, plant jewellery, tribal make-up, stripping the willow and much more.

Get Lost – Just Amazing Family Art Workshop
Wednesday 6th June 10am-4pm
Enjoy a range of arts activities and work with community artist, Karen Hansen, as part of a project to help build installations around a 350-metre labyrinth.

Learn How to Score a Movie
Thursday 7th June, workshop: 10am-2pm Swanage Middle School, Performance: 7.30 pm
Composer Stephen Warbeck, who won an Oscar for his musical score written for Shakespeare in Love helps young film makers in the daytime create music for their films and animation, before providing an evening performance that introduces his work and plays compositions to film with his award-winning ensemble.

Learn How to Play the Recorder with a Classical Musician
Saturday 2 June at 10.30pm recorder workshop with Rebecca Miles
Classical recorder player Rebecca Miles plays in the world-renowned classical musicians, Gabrieli Consort & Players.

The ensemble are committed to working with young musicians and at PAW 2012, this talented musician provides a hands-on recorder workshop helping young players fine tune their music, before opening the Gabrieli concert in the evening at 7pm.

You Tuba! Professional Tuba Musicians Wow the Crowds
Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May
The professional tuba players ‘YouTuba!’ will perform Saint-Saens’ mesmerising Carnival of the Animals at a tea-time family concert starting at 5.30pm on Sunday 27th May.

Crown the Castle and Help Honour Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee
Running throughout the 16 Festival days
From the opening weekend, till the Jubilee on the 4th June, there will be the chance to ‘Crown the Castle’ at Corfe by helping recreate a gigantic stone-built Jubilee Crown!
