Galaxy Quest (1999, PG)
Fighting aliens is all in a day’s work for the cast of famous TV sci-fi show Galaxy Quest – actors pretending to be aliens, that is. Then one day the crew of the starship (who all appear to hate each other off-screen) find their fictional job has suddenly become real – and they have a crisis to deal with many light years from Earth. A clever, laugh-out-loud comedy that makes fun of classic sci-fi shows, but has much more to offer than just jokes about clingy costumes and pointy ears.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980, U)
The second of the six Star Wars movies to be filmed, this is probably the darkest of the bunch. The rebels have destroyed the Death Star, but continue to fight the evil Empire. Luke attempts to rescue them, but during an intense lightsaber battle with Vader, some devastating secrets are revealed.

Explorers (1985, U)
Director Joe Dante’s Explorers is an inventive fantasy adventure in which two kids build their own space craft in a suburban garage – and encounter aliens who are able to communicate because they’ve absorbed earthling culture through 60s TV. Riotously good fun as it makes use of a whole host of amazing special effects, the film also boasts eye-catching early performances from stars Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix.

Flight of the Navigator (1986, U)

Tests reveal that David’s time away may be linked to a mysterious alien spacecraft being held by NASA, and when the boy makes contact with the UFO he discovers he can unlock its secrets.

In the Shadow of the Moon (2007, U)
This amazing documentary sheds fresh light on what was perhaps the single most inspiring achievement of the 20th century – the landing of man on the moon. 24 humans have travelled to the moon, and 12 have walked on its surface – and nine of the latter group are interviewed here. This astonishing movie features previously unseen footage from NASA’s own archives – jaw-dropping pictures of Earth as seen from space that underline the beauty and fragility of our world, as well as humanity’s ability to turn science fiction into fact.

For All Mankind (1989, E)
This stunning movie was pieced together from the archive footage of the Apollo missions, the huge US project that took men to the moon for the first time. Rather than make a conventional documentary, director Al Reinert has created the story of one trip to the moon from bits of many missions, with a soundtrack of the original conversations between the astronauts and ground control, plus later interviews with the men who went into space. The result is beautiful and awe-inspiring.
That’s it for this film season! We hope you enjoy World Space Week and this great season to go along with it!
