The Polymer £10 Note: Who is Jane Austen?

Jane Austen features on the polymer £10 note!

In 2017, our £10 notes got a bit of a makeover!

The polymer £10 note is made of the same sleek and tough plasticky polymer material as the fiver.

It features a portrait of Jane Austen who is one of the most well-known and popular British authors of all time!

Jane Austen was born in 1776. She wrote stories about families and the societies they lived in.

Her most famous book is probably ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and one of the characters from the book – Elizabeth Bennet – is illustrated next to Jane on the note.

A lot of the characters that Jane wrote about were women and she liked to show that they could be just as intelligent and funny as any man.

The new tenner also has a famous quotation from Pride and Prejudice – ‘I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!’

There are stacks of interesting details to look out for on the new note – including an outline of Jane’s 12 sided writing desk and of Godmersham Park House which was owned by Jane’s brother and is believed to be the inspiration for a number of her novels.

Take a closer look at the see through part… On it is a foil image of Winchester Cathedral, which is where Jane Austen was buried in 1817, aged just 41.
