US city bans people from looking at their mobile phones while walking!

But only whilst crossing roads (for now)

One US city is banning people from using their mobile phones while walking!

The law starts in October and the people who made it are hoping it stops accidents.

There were more than 11,100 injuries in America between 2000 and 2011 as a result of mobile phones.

People caught staring at devices whilst walking will be fined between between £11 and £75 depending on how many times they’ve been caught.

The ban includes laptops and cameras but urgent emergency calls are not included in the ban.

At the moment the ban only applies to people crossing the road but some residents think it should be extended to all walking.

The city’s mayor said he hoped the law would lead to improved road safety but one resident said the law was silly and people should just be more educated instead.
