MOTD Mag counts down the best January transfers!

  1. Scott Dann (Blackburn to Crystal Palace, 2014, £1.2m)

When Crystal Palace signed centre-back Dann from Blackburn, he was a Championship player with three relegations to his name – but he’s stepped up his game since then and was named Eagles Player Of The Year for 2015. Now the 28-year-old is being tipped to replace Blues legend John Terry at Chelsea.

  1. Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea to Bolton, 2011, Loan)

Is this the most successful loan deal ever? It’s got to be right up there! When Sturridge signed for Bolton, they were dangerously close to the Premier League relegation zone, but after scoring eight goals in 12 games he helped them to finish in a respectable 14th position. Super Studge to the rescue!

  1. Kurt Zouma (Saint-Etienne to Chelsea, 2014, £12m)

Some rival fans had a little chuckle when Chelsea paid £12m for unknown 19-year-old Kurt Zouma, but he’s since established himself as a solid starter for The Blues at centre-back and has even gone on to win two international caps for France! Who’s laughing now, eh?

  1. Jermain Defoe (West Ham to Tottenham, 2004, £6m)

Tottenham left this one until the very last minute and it’s a good job they got it done – Defoe went on to become a club legend. The nifty striker, now at Sunderland, netted 137 goals in 352 games during two spells at Spurs. His deadly finishing puts him 11th in the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers!

  1. Jack Butland (Birmingham to Stoke, 2013, £3.3m)

After signing for Stoke at the age of 19 and being sent out on loan four times, Butland has finally become the Potters’ No. 1. He’s now an England international and has put in so many man-of-the-match displays he’s regarded as one of the best keepers in the Prem! Next stop – Joe Hart’s No. 1 jersey for The Three Lions?

  1. Javier Mascherano (West Ham to Liverpool, 2007, Loan)

He arrived with a big rep, but Masch failed to nail a first-team spot at West Ham – so Liverpool fans weren’t expecting much when they brought him in. But his time on Merseyside was a lot different – he was wicked in midfield alongside Xabi Alonso and soon become loved for his no-nonsense tackling!

Everton v Watford - Premier League

  1. John Stones (Barnsley to Everton, 2013, £3m)

Stones had been at Barnsley all his life before his move to the Premier League, so it was a big step up for the then 18-year-old. But it didn’t take long for the silky centre-back to settle – he won the club’s Young Player Of The Year award in his second season and is now being linked to Barca and Real Madrid.

  1. Luis Suarez (Ajax to Liverpool, 2011, £22.8m)

When Suarez signed for Liverpool, he took the No. 7 shirt without realising it was once worn by club heroes Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish. No pressure then, Luis! Luckily for the Uruguayan, he also became a club legend after scoring 82 goals in 133 games. If that wasn’t enough, Liverpool pocketed £75m when he left for Barca in 2014!
