Grab your piggy bank and see if you’ve got any of these super rare coins inside!
The Royal Mint (the people who make the coins in the UK) create special one-off coins now and again – and if they’ve not made that many, it means they could be worth a fortune!
So a £2 coin could actually get you £100 if you sold it instead!
Sometimes mistakes are made during production and coin collectors love to find these too!
A Kew Gardens 50p = £50
Just 21,000 of these 50p’s were made to mark the 250th anniversary of Kew Gardens in 2011.
Apparently, 1 in 300 people will have one but they’re going to become harder to find as the Royal Mint has said this is the rarest coin in general circulation!
This 50p jumps in value to £50 if sold!
A dateless 20p = £100
The 20p coin was redesigned in 2008 and the date went from being on the back of the coin to the front.
An error in production meant 50,000 – 200,000 20p’s were produced that year with no date on them before the mistake was spotted!
Finding one will get you £100 if you sell it to a coin collector!
A special London 2012 swimming 50p = £3000
Special 50p coins were designed for all the sports in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
They were only produced in small numbers and a full set is worth about £35.
But there’s an Olympic swimming 50p where the water goes over the swimmer’s face and only 600 were released before the design was changed.
As there’s only 600 out there, this coin is worth £3000!
A Guy Fawkes £2 with a mistake = £16
Sometimes mistakes happen during the production process…
In 2005, a special £2 coin was created to mark the 400th anniversary of Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder plot to blow up Houses of Parliament.
If you find one saying “Pemember, Pemember the Fifth of November” instead of “Remember, Remember the Fifth of November” then it could actually be worth £16!
A King James Bible £2 = £6
This was a 2011 limited edition £2 coin created to mark the 400th anniversary of King James Bible.
Only 20,000 were produced and so it’s starting to become a collectors’ item.
They’re worth about £6 at the moment but that could rise in the future!
