We kick things off with the FILMCLUB Film of the Week!
FILMCLUB DVD Film of The Week: The Adventures of Tintin – The Secret of the Unicorn (2011, PG)
Director: Steven Speilberg
Cast: Jamie Bell; Daniel Craig; Simon Pegg; Nick Frost
The director of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the writer of Doctor Who and Sherlock and the latest James Bond film – could you ask for a better action/adventure pedigree?
Probably not, which is why so many fans were looking forward to Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the comic-book about the boy reporter and his little dog Snowy.
The animation is beautiful and glowing with life, the voices (especially Andy Serkis as the grumpy Captain Haddock) are spot-on and it’s a full on breathless adventure. A real treat.

Moneyball (2011, 12A)
Director: Bennett Miller
Cast: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman
During the 2002 Major League Baseball season the Oakland A’s became known as a failure. The turning-point arrives when perfectionist manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) employs a shy university student (Jonah Hill) who has a new idea – players should be bought based on their performance statistics; their value, personality and potential shouldn’t even be considered.
While the high-risk strategy begins to deliver results on the pitch, the friction caused by the cultural shift threatens an irrevocable implosion in the boardroom.
Even for people who don’t like baseball, this is an extremely interesting movie with a brilliant script and a cool look at a sport we don’t see much of here in the UK. It might even make you want to get outside and play the game too!
Fascinating Fact: The film is based on the 2003 book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game.

Resistance (2011, PG)
Director: Amit Gupta
Cast: Michael Sheen; Andrea Riseborough; Tom Wlaschiha; Iwan Rheon
The impact of war is looked at in this drama that imagines what life would have been like had the Nazis invaded Britain.
Set in a remote Welsh valley in 1944, the story sees the female inhabitants struggling to survive under the watchful eyes of a group of German soldiers, after all the men mysteriously disappear – apparently to join the resistance movement.
With cows and fields to look after and the weather getting worse and worse, the women soon have no choice but to accept the enemy soldiers’ offers of help.
A complex film not suitable for younger viewers but a really interesting look into what could have happened in World War II had things turned out a little differently.
