Explore exciting worlds with our Filmclub’s Season of the Week

Space2020SupernovaThis month saw the annual British Science Festival, the largest event of its kind in Europe and a chance for you to explore science outside of the school labs.

2011’s theme was ‘Exploring New Worlds’ a topic aimed at getting us all looking to the stars and imagining donning our orange spacesuits and heavy glass helmets.

apollo13_1To help get your explorations off to a flying start our film expert friends at education charity FILMCLUB have put together a season of some of the best stargazing movies the cinema has to offer.

From the Oscar-nominated Encounters at the end of the World to the true story of NASA’s first manned mission in space depicted in Phillips Kauffman’s Right Stuff there is plenty for those interested in space and sci-fi films!

600full-galaxy-quest-screenshotTwo of our favourites have to be the exciting drama Apollo 13 and the real life accounts of the original spacemen Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong in In the Shadow of the Moon.

If you are after something more lighthearted then very funny Star Trek parody, Galaxy Quest, starring one of the all-time Queens of sci-fi, Sigourney Weaver, is a must-see.

2001_a_space_odyssey1Of course no exploratory journey into space would be complete without the inclusion of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001: Space Odyssey.

So if your eyes are always to the skies, grab your telescope, fire up the thrusters and take a trip into the unknown with our films of the week!

Do you think we’ve missed any out that are a must-see? Let us know by leaving a comment below!
