FILMCLUB Film of The Week:

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012, 12)

Snow-White-and-The-Huntsman-Movie-filmclub

Director: Rupert Sanders

Cast: Kristen Stewart; Charlize Theron; Chris Hemsworth; Sam Claflin; Ian McShane; Bob Hoskins; Ray Winstone; Nick Frost

This big-budget extravaganza, with its eye-catching special effects, gives the age-old fairy tale the Hollywood blockbuster treatment. Itโ€™s certainly darker and more violent than the beloved Disney animation, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and, with its epic, Lord of the Rings-style battle sequences and terrifying collection of monsters and villains, itโ€™s recommended for older audiences.

Charlize Theron is chilling as Ravenna, the wicked queen, who jealously demands Snow White be killed on account of her beauty. However, the huntsman ordered to murder her is not only unable to go through with it, but becomes her protector.

The second of two films based around Snow White this year (the first being Mirror Mirror) this is definitely the scarier one with lots of action and great stunts to enjoy โ€“ why not remind yourself of the story with the brilliant Disney classic before settling down in the cinema with this version and compare the two films and their differences.

Top Cat โ€“ The Movie (2012, U)

Top-Cat-Still-1-580x326

Director: Alberto Mar

Cast: Jason Harris, Bill Lobley, Chris Edgerly, Melissa Disney

The old after-school TV favourite may not be so familiar to more recent generations of children, but younger audiences should still enjoy the adventures of this wise-cracking cat.

A streetwise city-dweller with a band of faithful followers, Top Cat has always delighted in outsmarting Officer Dibble, the neighbourhood cop. But when Dibble is framed by the cityโ€™s out-of-control new police chief, can Top Cat come to the rescue?

A pleasing mix of old-fashioned slapstick and silly one-liners, this isnโ€™t as eye-popping as other big-screen animations, and may not be clever enough for older audiences, but it has a charm of its own. Perfect for the under 10โ€™s we reckon!
