Here’s what 13-year-old Ben Howard thought:
Real Steel is an action packed family fun film which stars X-Men’s own Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) as Charlie who is an old professional boxer who soon retired.
Now Robots have taken over the ring, he is has turned out to be one of the worst robot boxing coaches in the country, after his last battle he is hopeless and to make things worse for him he is now stuck with his son, Max (Dakota Goyo), who he never previously knew he had.
The director, Shawn Levy, who also directed ‘Cheaper by the Dozen’ and ‘The Pink Panther’, has outdone himself by making a truly epic movie.
It had an unusual mixture of the contemporary and futuristic – for instance there was a scene where highly advanced robot control technology was used in a conventional boxing ring. There were quite a lot of boxing terms used throughout the movie so to fully enjoy the experience it would be useful to have some knowledge about boxing.
Since the robots weren’t able to talk, there were many action scenes without much dialogue, but at the same time the film was never boring because there were lots of scenes that did contain conversation, there was an interesting and detailed plot to follow.
The film is like a cross between the two films ‘Rocky’ which followed the life of an aging boxer and ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’, which contained many different types of robots.
For me, the scariest part was when Max was looking down a steep cliff, when all of a sudden the edge crumbled under his weight, sending him sliding feet first to his near death!
I would really recommend this film.

And here’s the thoughts of Michael:
I thought it was going to be one of those cheesy, campy, not really believable, warm fuzzy, type of second best movies. However I was actually surprised. It had some great plot twists; it had a real story line.
It did make a good family movie for older kids, 10+ (my opinion). The ending wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but looking back I think I liked it better for that. Who wants an ending they can see coming the entire movie?
The movie also contained many different genres such as romance, action and much more. I advise you to watch this movie – it would have you sitting at the edge of your seat!
