BLITZ KIDS: HOME LIFE AND PLAY

The Blitz Kids are looking forward to Christmas 1943… and Cousin Betty is coming up to London to shop with her mother… and to see George.

George is excited for Christmas 1943, especially because Cousin Betty is coming to visit London with her mother. It’s been a long time since they’ve seen each other and George can’t wait to show Betty around the city, even though things are very different with the war going on. With all the bomb sites, blackout conditions and rationing, Christmas isn’t quite as festive as usual, but everyone is still making the most of it.

At the train station, George and his friend Peter meet Betty and her mother. Betty is amazed by how confusing everything is with street names covered up and windows taped up to protect from explosions. They head home to find carrot biscuits waiting and George explains that the new sideboard in their house was part of the rationing system, where furniture is simple and valued in utility units.

They talk about life during the war – Peter jokes about still using an outhouse, while Betty shares that her outhouse is next to the pigpen! After some laughs, George gives Betty a few gifts, including a book about a female pilot and a toy tractor for her brother.

However, things get tense when a loud bang rings out in the background and Betty is shocked by how used to the noise George and Peter are. But it’s just another day in London during the war. It all ends with everyone sharing a piece of cake, made mostly of breadcrumbs, as they try to enjoy what little joy they can during difficult times.

In the end, George reflects on how Christmas is still a time for family and friends, even though many homes were destroyed during the war. It’s a reminder that the people around you matter most, even if things aren’t perfect.

Next time: The Blitz Kids are back at school, but with some changes – don’t forget your gas mask!
