A Wizard Called Spellgod
Jamieâs life was about to change forever. Not that he knew it as he ran through the forest near his home. Playing with friends at the weekend was Jamieâs absolute favourite thing to do and on a sunny day the forest was a brilliant maze of trees that you could play games in. As Jamie ran deeper into the forest he noticed something on the floor. Something⊠wooden. But not like a tree. Like aâŠ
Trapdoor!!
âMy friends are going to LOVE thisâ he thought as he reached out to find the handle. The trapdoor opened and there was a wooden staircase leading down. Jamie could barely believe his eyes, and couldnât wait to find out what exactly was down the trapdoor, so being led by curiosity, and curiosity alone, Jamie made his way through the trapdoor and down the staircase.
There was just enough light for Jamie to find his way to the bottom of the stairs. As he descended he heard bubbling and saw little shafts of rainbow light glinting off the walls. It seemed he had entered some sort of underground cavern. There were crystals and potions and strange looking enchanted objects scattered all around.
âNo oneâs going to believe thisâ he thought. âIâd better go and get some other people to see it, otherwise people will think Iâve made this place upâ. Jamie started to go back up the stairs but the trapdoor shut. âOh wellâ, he thought, âIâd best have a bit of an explore. Iâm sure the others will see the trapdoor and open it soon enoughâ.
Again, led by his curiosity, and his curiosity alone, Jamie explored the cavern.
âExcuse me, this is my homeâ came a trembly voice. Jamie jumped out of his skin and looked round to see a man in a big robe standing next to a robot with a horn!
âI am Spellgod, and this is my friend Unicornbotâ. Unicornbot was a dazzling creature with a shiny white coat, a radiant rainbow horn, and a fancypants uniform that sparkled with a magical glow. Unicornbot approached JamieâŠ
âItâs ok. Sheâs friendlyâ said Spellgod. Unicornbot nuzzled Jamieâs hand and started to make a contented noise that seemed like a cross between a purr and a grunt. [Text Wrapping Break][Text Wrapping Break]âUnicornbot came to me a long time agoâ said Spellgod. Sheâs very friendly and has helped save lots of people. When I first met her, she was very lonely, so I asked her to come to live here where she can use her magic to help peopleâ
âCan she help me open the trapdoorâ asked Jamie
âShe can, but first, we both need your help. You discovered us for a reason. You were drawn here by Unicornbotâs magic, which means you probably have special powers of your own.â
Jamie was a bit takenaback. The only time anyone had called him magic was when he scored a goal in the inter-school championship last year. He was pretty sure he had no actual magic to help with things.
But there was real trouble happening in the underworld that Spellgod lived in.
âSo many of us live here under the ground and it has always been peaceful. That was, until Badbotâ
Spellgod explained that Badbot was a bad robot with an even worse name. Badbot lived in a dark, distant part of the underworld and he was always trying to steal Spellgodâs magical crystals.
âBut thatâs not the worst of itâ said Spellgod. âIâve had word that Badbot intends to ruin my magical garden. If he does, itâll be the end of things for us here in the underworldâ.
Jamie was getting a bit scared. âWhy would your garden being destroyed ruin the underworldâ he asked.
It turns out that Spellgodâs garden contains all his magical spells, and provides all the light and warmth for the underworld. Spellgod and Unicornbot had been staying up every night for the past few weeks to make sure Badbot didnât come into their garden, but they were getting sleepy. And thatâs where Jamieâs life was about to change forever.
Jamie had more energy that most eight year olds. He could stay awake way past his bedtime, much to the annoyance of his Dad, who was always telling him how important sleep was.
âHow are we going to stop Badbot?â Asked Jamie.
Spellgod looked at him very seriouslyâŠ
âWe must cross the river of lava, make the stalactites laugh and then confront Badbotâ said Spellgod.
âOh just thatâ said Jamie, trying to make a joke.
âThat sort of humour should work well with the stalactites. They like a good laughâ said Spellgod.
Unicornbot indicated towards a dimly lit passage. Their mission was about to begin.
Jamie wasnât very brave, but he was curious, so motivated by curiosity, and curiosity alone, Jamie set off with Spellgod and Unicornbot, to confront Badbot. Before long they reached a rickety bridge, over a river of lava. The bridge creaked as they slowly went over it. Unicornbotâs hoof trippedâŠ. But they managed to stay upright, and despite the bridge swaying a bit, they managed to get to the other side.
Before them were a series of stalactites, hanging from the ceiling of the cave they were in. âTell us a joke, tell us a joke, tell us a joke or weâll give you a pokeâ. Well, Jamie didnât want to be poked by a stalactite so he went for his best joke.
âWhy did the banana go to the doctor?â
There was a pause. The stalactites looked at each other. Oh yeah, did I mention the stalactites have eyes? Yeah, thatâs a thing.
After a pause that seemed slightly too long, the stalactites said âWe donât know, why did the banana go to the doctor?
Jamie replied âBecause he wasnât peeling too wellâ
There was another pause which, once again seemed slightly too long, and thenâŠ
Ha ha
Hahahah
Hahahahahahahahaha
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
The stalactites started to laugh so hard they were falling off from the ceiling. When they had stopped, they lay there and said âYou may passâ. So Spellgod, Unicornbot and Jamie did exactly that. They went through the cave and finally reachedâŠ
The magical garden.
And there he was. Causing mayhem. It was Badbot. And just like his name suggested⊠he was pretty bad. He was already trying to dismantle all the crystals that held Spellgodâs magic. Jamie looked at Badbot and Badbot looked at Jamie. Jamie was scared, but⊠he was also curious. So driven by his curiosity, and his curiosity alone, Jamie took a step forward. And a strange thing happened. Badbot started to run away.
Well, hereâs the thing about being curious, when you really want to know something, thereâs nothing that can stop you from finding out the answer, so Jamie started chasing after Badbot. Badbot ran and ran and ran but in the end his battery started to wear out. Whereas Jamie had more energy than anyone at his school, so Jamie just kept on chasing until he caught up with Badbot. [Text Wrapping Break]
âPlease, Iâll do anything, but please, please stop chasing meâ said Badbot, his battery barely letting him get the words out.
âI want you to leave the magical garden aloneâ said Jamie. Badbot looked sad. âBut where will I have my fun?â
At this point, Spellgod and Unicornbot caught them up. âSorry weâre lateâ said Spellgod. âWeâre not as fast as you are. You see, I told you that you had special powers!â
Jamie had a thought. âAre you lonelyâ he asked Badbot. Badbot looked up, rather shamefaced and nodded his head up and down. âBadbot, I want you to meet Unicornbot. Youâre both robots who have been lonely. Now you have someone to play withâ
âWell done Jamieâ said Spellgod.
Just then, Jamie remembered, heâd been playing with his friends. He waved goodbye to Unicornbot, Spellgod and Badbot (who, by the way, really needed to change his name, but⊠spoiler alert⊠didnât).
When he came out of the trapdoor, Jamie noticed something new. He was⊠tired. He NEVER felt tired. He let out a yawn, and slowly walked home. That night when dad put him to bed, he went straight to sleep for the first time ever. And he dreamed about his new friends in the underworld, knowing that now he could see them whenever he went to sleep.
