Hints on what information to include in your winning advert:
- Aluminum is the most abundant metal on Earth. It is light and strong, meaning it makes everything from fizzy drink cans to airplanes!
- It used to be worth more than gold! Long ago, it was super difficult to pull pure aluminum out of rocks. It was so rare that French Emperor Napoleon III made his most important guests eat off shiny aluminum plates, while the rest of his guests just had to use gold!
- It’s inside the Earth’s crust – aluminum is the third most common element in the Earth’s crust (after oxygen and silicon). It doesn’t grow on trees; it is dug up from the ground as a special reddish-brown rock called bauxite.
- It’s an extreme super-recycler! Recycling aluminum is amazing for the planet because it uses 95% less energy than making it from raw rocks. An old can be crushed, melted, and put back on a store shelf as a brand new drink can in as little as 60 days!
- It does not rust – unlike iron, which turns red and flakes away when it gets wet, aluminum doesn’t rust because of a superpower. When it touches the air, it forms a microscopic layer of “shielding” that protects it from water and weather.
- It is incredibly light – aluminum is three times lighter than steel. Its low weight is what allows huge jumbo jets to soar through the sky. It also keeps your snacks fresh in lunchboxes
