Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest festival of history and architecture, and every single thing in it is free.
It runs from Friday 11th to Sunday 20th September, and thousands of places open their doors for nothing at all: castles, towers, tunnels, town halls, lighthouses, workshops and buildings you normally walk straight past.
This year the theme is everyday histories, so as well as the grand stuff you can meet the people who keep a place running, from bakers and butchers to rescue crews.
Loads of it is hands-on and made for families, and most of it needs no ticket.
