Series 2, Episode 14: World Wide Web

Who invented the World Wide Web?

Bonjour! It’s Nancy here – from the soon-to-be world famous pop group Nancy and the Meerkats!

Nancy-1After our first record “Put Your Paws Up” became a massive hit, we’re off on a huge tour of the UK!

We haven’t quite made it to stadium status yet – some of the venues are more Weeny than Wembley – but I’m going to be letting you know what’s been going on each day in my journal for Fun Kids!

We’re now halfway through our sell out tour so I thought it’d be a great idea to check out the fan websites to see pictures from the gigs and find out what people think of it all so far!

There were loads of lovely comments like… ooh, read this… “the best show ever from the most desirable diva!” I like that one! And this… “I wanna be a Meerkat! Love the girls!” How nice!

But there was one fan site that wasn’t so friendly. It said “Is Nancy getting a bit fat? She looks like she’s swapped songs for sausage rolls!” How mean!

Something told me that this wasn’t a real fan and, when I clicked on the profile photo, sure enough it was none other than that furball from hell Kitty Perry! She’s been sneaking into the fan pages and saying horrible things!

The good thing is she’s definitely outnumbered – there’s about a million fan sites for the band and most of what they post is really kind!

In Big Joe’s day ,if you wanted to tell a popstar they were great you’d have to yell it at the stage or write them a letter! Fan Mail they used to call it! I can’t imagine what it was life without the internet!

Apparently the internet is all thanks to a guy called Tim Berners Lee. He worked out a way for people to link their internet pages to other pages and it created a web of connections between sites – the World Wide Web! That’s the clever technology behind all our clicks!

It’s a brilliant invention and what’s even better is that he gave the idea away for free! It’s meant that everyone can use the World Wide Web to link up pages and if it wasn’t free maybe it wouldn’t have been such a success!

It’s certainly kind of addictive! You go on one website… click on a link to another… and then on to another… and another…. and another…

…and oops! I’m not sure what I’m on now! One click led to another! I was looking at fansites, then sites about fans and then sites about blowers, hand blowers, toilet accessories… toilets through the ages… and ended up on this site about Viking toilets!

I must have just got stuck in the web!
