FILMCLUB DVD Film of The Week:

The Artist (2011, PG)

1205-LRAINER-The-Artist_full_600

Director: Michel Hazanavicius

Cast: Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller

This Oscar-winning, incredibly clever tribute to silent era cinema is filmed in black-and-white and has no talking. But don’t let that put you off, because it’s an absolute cracker! Visually gorgeous and hugely funny, the comedy drama opens in 1927, with screen star George Valentin riding high in Hollywood before the dawn of the ‘talkies’ (movies with speaking in them).

Rich and ultra-famous, he feels invincible, making him happy to help wannabe actress Peppy Miller achieve her dream when she romantically crosses his path.

However, the sudden arrival of sound in movies throws his kindness back in his face, as Peppy is transformed into a massive star almost overnight and George painfully falls from grace.

Winner of five Oscars including the ‘Best Motion Picture’ award this was widely thought to be one of the best films of last year. Even better, it is a brilliant way to get into black and white and silent films which can sometimes seem a little bit boring but are in fact some of the best, most exciting films ever made!

Look out for a show stealing turn from Uggie the dog as George’s sidekick and enjoy a film unlike any other you may have seen – highly recommended.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2011, PG)

journey-2-the-mysterious-island-movie

Director: Brad Peyton

Cast: Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens

An exotic, if a little far fetched, follow up to 2008’s Journey To The Centre of The Earth. This time Sean has received a coded distress from an island in the South Pacific that doesn’t exist on the map.

Convinced the signal is from his grandfather he sets out to find him with the help of his stepfather (played by former wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), Gabato the only helicopter pilot willing to make the journey and his beautiful daughter Kailani.

But finding the mysterious island and locating Sean’s grandfather is only the beginning of this over the top adventure. As the group of unlikely explorers venture deeper into the beautiful and magical island, its hidden dangers begin to unravel.

This is a film which delivers what you would expect it to, an over the top adventure full of big effects and a story line which borders of the unbelievable in more than a few places. That said, if you want an easy to watch family movie suitable for younger kids this is perfect – otherwise, you might want to check out some of our recommendations instead.
