What’s the Q-Stock Train?

These were a brand new type of train car that were brought in to replace the old ones. Well, not too new now. They were introduced in 1935 and were used until 1970!

What was wrong with the old cars?

The old ones were built around 1900 and were wooden and draughty. They weren’t very nice to be a passenger on, which is why they decided to modernise them.

What was so great about these new cars?

They were built much better so that they were more comfortable for passengers to ride on.

They also had much nicer windows and had distinctive flared sides, which were partly to stop people riding on the outside of cars. People used to do this to try and get a free ride on the train!

Where are the Q-Train cars now?

They are at London Transport Museum’s Acton Depot and are currently undergoing some restoration from the the volunteers helping to bring them back to their former glory.
